Theme Night Anyone?

A theme for world issues this year that I found throughout the year was action. Action because, in class we talked about current events and ways to help people. It started in the beginning of the year with what we can do for our environment and stop wasting water and electricity. By the end of the year we talked about seven steps to create a change in problems we thought were important. My issue was crime among young people, and I talked about the actions I could take to make a change.

Ring Around the Rosey bin Laden

The death of bin Laden is a massive event that happened. This could mean many things. I believe that it will spark and help push terrorist attacks. My reasoning is because bin Laden was the leader of a group called Al Queda, a terrorist group in the Middle East; and with the death of there leader I think they will show the world that they have not gone anywhere and will want to show there power. This shows America’s power because no country is willing to stop America from running through country to country.

The Big CARE

Compassion – This would be because, you need to feel emotion to make a difference. If you did not care about anything, you would have no motivation to change it.

Equality – Equality comes second because everyone needs to be equal to make a change. Equality is a major factor in this CARE model. There is no difference in skin colour or religion.

Action – This is third because once you are based, and you know what you want to change then there is nothing stopping you! TAKE ACTION!

Responsibility – This is important because you need to be responsible when you are creating change.

Japan soon to be new Atlantis

Over the holiday break, a terrible natural disaster occurred. On March 11, 2011, Japan was hit with an earthquake tsunami. This was devastating because the amount of damage the occurred was large enough that the price to fix the problems was questioned to be around 14-35 billion dollars. The earthquake that hit was the highest earthquake to be recorded in Japan reaching a magnitude of 8.9 of the rector scale. This is the sixth most powerful earthquake to ever be recorded. After the earthquake, a giant tsunami was made. This tsunami swept up villages and houses almost instantly with waves reaching as high as 23ft on shore. With all the damage done, Japan was headed for the worst with a nuclear reactor (Fukushima) being damaged releasing large amounts of radiation. Since then there is a death toll of 1800 people and about 10,000 missing.

Wikileaks new Terrorist?

World security is potentially threatened by Wikileaks because no one knows where they get there information and if it is correct. This is very bad, because it forces people to either believe what they hear and wonder if someone is giving information from your side. Or if it is true and you are in danger because someone is accessing important information and you don’t know how.

China vs USA?

With China rising to become a super power, this will have a major impact on our world. Since the Soviet Union crashed, the United States of America has been the only standing super power of the world. Now that China is trying to become the second super power, I believe there will be a standoff between the two. Both China and America will be competing in almost any category, whether it be in military arms, financially, or who can control more countries. There was a spotting of China showing its power, not by force but by limiting to export a mineral that was normally given to Japan; one of America’s allies. Soon whole world would watch Japan beg for China to continue to export the mineral; and the United States of America not even budge at trying to protect Japan. To me this shows just the beginning of the two countries colliding for power.

Globalization

Globalization is the spread of information throughout the global network. This makes it easier for countries around the world to get needed information and tool to complete everyday jobs. Globalization allows the world to connect in many different forms. I believe globalization is a good thing in small antidotes, it helps with doctors and new discovery’s, and also can help business’s prosper and become successful. Globalization has a negative effect which can be devastating to countries GDP.

AIC Conflict

The Arab Israeli Conflict (AIC) is a role playing simulation of the current problem, happening over in the Middle East. The conflict was about a two different racial groups, the Arabs and the Israeli’s, over a large piece of land. Experts say that the conflict has gone on for over a century. The piece of land that the groups were fighting over was Israel. During the simulation, I was playing the Prime Minister of Jordan, Samir Rifai. My role was to get in contact with other Prime Ministers and try to reach a middle point where everyone was happy. I hope to get a better understanding of the Middle East and the history that it has.

The Big Fat Reason

The reason I am taking world issues, is because I believed it will strengthen my problem solving skills and increase my geographic knowledge. Over the year, I have noticed that I have more knowledge, and understanding about global issues going on around the world. What I believe the most important global issue, is pollution. My thinking is that since we have such a giant population, if we don’t take care of the world and keep polluting it, we will destroy the Earth much faster then it would normally last. Some of the major issues today are because of pollution, such as: global warming, acid rain and erratic weather patterns. If we do not solve this issue soon, it will come past a point where we will not be able to fix the problem.
